Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Hop

April 25, 2011

By Scott Martin Hop, USA, 2011 Directed by Tim Hill For those who know me, it’s no secret that I usually find movies like this a bit deplorable. There’s just something about the live-action/animation hybrid that I can’t ever get behind. Be it Yogi Bear (2010), or the Scooby-Doo movies, or the Alvin and the [...]

Armadillo

April 22, 2011

By Ezra Stead Armadillo, Denmark, 2010 Directed by Janus Metz Danish director Janus Metz’s Armadillo has been criticized by some for its use of fiction film techniques in depicting the day-to-day lives of Danish soldiers stationed in Afghanistan; many of these detractors point to the very similar American film Restrepo (2010) as a model of [...]

Red Riding Hood

April 20, 2011

By Scott Martin Red Riding Hood, USA / Canada, 2011 Directed by Catherine Hardwicke I grew up wanting this film. Not this film, strictly speaking, but what this film could have been. I’ve often said that the most important part of film criticism is to not judge what could have been, but what is, and [...]

Scenechronize – The Efficient, Environmentally-Friendly Future Of Production

April 18, 2011

By Ezra Stead Last month, marketwire.com covered the story of a $5 million dollar series B financing deal led by three private investors for the web-based production management system known as “scenechronize.” Scenechronize is the only system of its kind currently in use, and it is already streamlining the production process of numerous films and [...]

Source Code

April 15, 2011

By Scott Martin Source Code, Canada / France / USA, 2011 Directed by Duncan Jones This film has Terry Gilliam’s fingerprints all over it, especially those of the Gilliam who made Twelve Monkeys (1995). But, here, the closest we get to Brad Pitt’s rambling genius is Michelle Monaghan in an adorable outfit. Better, though, is the lead performance from [...]

Birdemic: Shock And Terror

April 13, 2011

By Ezra Stead Birdemic: Shock and Terror, USA, 2008 Written and Directed by James Nguyen After years – hell, nearly two decades – of searching, I think I just may have found the absolute worst movie ever made. Though Michael Bay’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009), my previous choice, is indeed the most mind-numbing [...]

Limitless

April 11, 2011

By Scott Martin Limitless, USA, 2011 Directed by Neil Burger Limitless is limited, but it proposes something interesting. Granted, its proposal is one we’ve heard dozens of times, a couple of which were to chilling effect (echoes of the 1968 film Charly, based on Daniel Keyes’ short story, ”Flowers for Algernon,” are plenty), but that doesn’t [...]
